RI Treasurer Raimondo warns against efforts to change pension overhaul

By Phillip Marcelo, Providence Journal

Less than six months after lawmakers approved a plan to overhaul the state pension system, labor unions representing police, firefighters and state workers have backed at least four bills in the General Assembly designed to roll back some of the changes.

The proposals have drawn strong opposition from state General Treasurer Gina Raimondo, the pension overhaul’s chief architect, as well as the association representing cities and towns, and a local Tea Party group.

The bills would only delay the pension system’s return to a healthy funding level, Raimondo says.
