United Auto Workers President Bob King is calling on union members to join him in protesting a fund-raising appearance by Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker at the San Marino Club in Troy on Tuesday — the opening salvo in a nonviolent civil disobedience campaign called the “99 Percent Spring.”
An outgrowth of the Occupy Wall Street movement, the group is seeking to up the ante in the fight against what it perceives as unbridled corporate greed.
Walker faces a recall election in Wisconsin because of helping pass a law that stops requiring the state government to collectively bargain with its largest public employee unions. He will be speaking at the Ronald Reagan dinner sponsored by the Michigan 9th Congressional District Committee that is expected to attract 500 attendees, said Dennis Pittman, executive director of the Oakland County Republican Party.
